Elk Rapids MI Area Guide

The Elk Rapids Township is the most charming of all the harbor towns in Northwest Lower Michigan. Elk Rapids is about 15 miles north of Traverse City and just over 20 miles south of Charlevoix. Elk Rapids is embraced by East Grand Traverse Bay to the west, Elk Lake to the east and Bass Lake to the north.

Elk Rapids is the perfect place to live for year-round outdoor fun. The area offers spectacular golfing, fishing, boating, hunting, biking, hiking, skiing and more. Elk Rapids is comprised of just over seven square miles of territory, and everything is within a minute’s distance! From public beaches, unique dining, quaint shops to a marina, Elk Rapids has it all at your fingertips.

Elk Rapids History

In 1852, Elk Rapids was the first in Antrim County. Elk Rapids was originally named Stevens, but when a set of elk horns were found in the Meguzee River, the name Elk Rapids was adopted in 1858. Elk Rapids was the Antrim County seat until 1879. The county quickly began to grow and the county seat was soon moved to Keno, which is now Bellaire.

Today the area continues to grow, and Elk Rapids is at the heart of this growth, with a complete renovation of the downtown area, a new and expanded marina on Elk Lake and Lake Michigan, and a community spirit that lends itself to the quality of life this area is so proud of.

The Elk Rapids community is dedicated to their park system and open spaces. The Elk Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing a safe and clean environment for their residents and visitors.

Elk Rapids Day Park offers beach access, a picnic area, nature trails, a pavilion, bathhouse and a playground.

Annual In-Water Boat Show and Sale
At the Annual In-water Boat Show, new and used boat dealers and exhibitors will be displaying boats and boat related equipment. There will be sailboats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, ski boats, luxury boats, entertainment, door prizes and refreshments. Admission is free.

Evenings on River Street
Evenings on River Street is a popular community event held on River Street in downtown Elk Rapids on a weekly basis throughout the summer. There is live entertainment, food and activities for both adults and children.

Golf Outing
Each spring the Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce holds a golf outing to benefit the Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce community events.

Harbor Days
The Elk Rapids Harbor Days celebration has been a popular event in Michigan for over 50 years. The four day event kicks off with Evening on River Street and the following days include activities such as sandcastle building, a carnival, a parade and so much more!

Arts and Crafts Show
The Elk Rapids Arts and Crafts shows are a popular summer tradition. These outdoor shows are held rain or shine and attract a wide variety of crafters. Here you can browse for jewelry, pottery, clothing, woodworked items and more.
